Professor Bracewell belongs to the American Astronomical Society and the Royal Astronomical Society and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He joined the Stanford faculty in 1955. Bracewell is also known for being the first to propose the use of autonomous interstellar space probes for of communication between alien civilisations as an alternative to radio transmission dialogs. This hypothetical concept has been dubbed the Bracewell probe after its inventor.
