a day off
Ray-Jones, Tony; Ellis, Ainslie (introduction). a day off. Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1974. First American Edition. ISBN: 0821207083. 4to. 120 b&w photographs. Owner's blindstamp. Very good +. Paperback.
A wonderful, humorous, and honest photographic portrait of 1960s British folk at leisure. Photographer Ray-Jones' aim was in part to capture a specific era of British play before it was in his words "Americanized". Here he accomplishes this admirably through wry but affectionate portraits of ordinary people relaxing on their day off, whether it be sun-bathing, camping, playing children's games, sight-seeing, staging plays, or dancing. Each photo is full of detail, both of the subject's personality as well as their environment. Village life, social events, the natural world, and folk culture are captured in time by Ray-Jones' unique lens. Though he passed at the age of 31 his celebrated and scarce book a day off is now considered a classic of British documentary photography.
