It’s fun being part of a members-only club, isn’t it? You really are getting to see all the best books before anyone else. We have a shelf behind the counter where we stash the best of the best and save them just for you.
These books, with their colourful jackets and beige pages, are then polished by a collective of tiny book gnomes who live in the brick walls of our store. They come out night wearing white cotton gloves and carrying with them itsy-bitsy microfibre cloths that they sprinkle with fairy dust. When we come in each morning, we can see the results of the labour. The books are brighter, sultrier, and in some cases have been completely replaced with new titles (bye, bye Dan Brown, hello R. Crumb!). They add leather and gilt, and little satin ribbons, or the marginalia of 1960s radicals. Each book they touch becomes a treasure.
We would be nowhere without our book gnomes. This list could not have been assembled without them. So, we’d like to take this moment to salute Freddy, Nora, little Joe with his missing toe, Geraldine, Pat, and of course, Mr. Paloozawonkadoinkdoink. Thank you for being the best book gnomes any shop keeper could ask for.
