You Came Out and Danced to Joan Jett

It’s quite something, to stand at the back of a room full of people who have come out to support you, to see them smiling and laughing, to take a swig of wine out of a coffee mug and know that everything is going to be okay.

We owe that to you.

We are continually astounded by the power of community. So many of you bought tickets to our raffle and offered words of support. You came out and danced to Joan Jett and No Doubt and bought books. You bought books, and this is the most astounding thing of all, that through all the challenges and strife and bullshit that surrounds us everyday, there are still people who want to read and learn and be part of this little indie bookstore in this little Canadian city. That blows our minds.

Vanessa was joking that we should change our slogan from “Beautiful Books for Smart People” to “Smart Books for Beautiful People.” You are beautiful. We can’t go around realizing this all the time. If we did, our brains would simply explode with gorgeousness. We wouldn’t be able to walk under the beauty of it. Nevertheless, here we are in this pretty little shop, able to scratch out a living with the support of smart, engaged, creative, kind people like you.

If you’re having a bad day, please look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are part of the magic that makes up this place. Even if you didn’t buy a raffle ticket or come to the party. Maybe you couldn’t afford to. Maybe you were busy. But just by signing up to our email list and reading this short letter, you are supporting us and taking part in a truly beautiful thing.

Thank you.

Much love,
Jason and Vanessa

P.S. The bill has been paid.
