A few months ago we announced that we were going to start publishing books. The wisdom of this choice to publish books remains unknown. Why take one vocation and make it two, one asks? Why indeed? But we want to. We want to so badly. We want to so badly that we went out and published one. It’s a very good book, a very good book by a very good writer and artist. Not to make it about us…but we wanted to clarify that we are not that guy at the party who says he’ll start a band with you and then doesn’t show up for practice. When we are drunk at parties our word is still our bond. This commitment beneath the Muses is the secret to a fruitful life, we think, and perhaps the cause of some great Rock ‘n’ Roll. It certainly is, in our case, the reason why we have this lovely thing in our hands, a book by the extraordinary artist Sammy Orlowski.
What is it and who is she? Well we will tell you. Sammy is a zinester who has been making fantastic zines in downtown London for a while now. They are very funny. They are very beautiful. She sends us fantastic zines in the mail too through her subscription service. We carry her zines in the shop. We place them on our little table at the front and people pick them up and buy them. People fall in love with them. They read them aloud to their friends in the shop. Our nine-year old read them aloud to us! We could wax poetic about Sammy’s talent, her ability to connect with readers, her unpretentious, direct style, but we won’t. You don’t want that kind of copy, and we feel nauseous writing it. The truth is that Sammy writes and draws zines that connect — connect? we hate that word, people are not an electrical grid — people fall in love with. We love them. Our customers love them. So, we published them. Add that Sammy herself is a dream artist and writer and you have a recipe for happiness.
It’s that simple.
We took them to Home County and the same thing happened that happens in the shop. People picked them up and said, “I TOO HAVE A LOVE AFFAIR WITH PIZZA!” or “SAILOR MOON MADE ME BI-SEXUAL ALSO!” These are the bonds that truly form a community. We offer it to you now, these bi-sexual bonds, these affairs of the pizza heart…we offer you MY BIG DUMB BRAIN, now available in our shop and online store. You will feel seen. You will be changed. You will not regret having this to read while you’re pooping.
