Rounding Out the Sleaze Pile

We have a wonderful bunch of books available for you today on the member’s new arrivals page. A very focused and bright collector recently sold us a fantastic lot of pulps (vintage sleaze pulps at that) and among them are some surprisingly relevant titles. Of note (and our personal favourite) is an early work by the million-dollar-named, Artemis Smith, coiner of the term “out of the closet” and early Rainbow activist who worked in the pulp field before LGBTQ literature was mainstream. Her Odd Girl is offered here in a lovely edition. Included as well is the first edition of Stone Butch Blues, a pioneering work of transgender literature by Leslie Feinberg, signed by the author no less!

Additionally, we have other sleaze pulps galore, including lesbian literature by Sally Singer, writing under the pen name March Hastings, offering some of the few instances of lesbian pulp written by an actual woman! Her works are very collectible. Of course, alongside hers are a few works by men on the subject, still interesting in their own right, some by future mystery stars such as Donald Westlake and Lawrence Block. Oh, those days were steamy. Orrie Hitt, the prolific mastermind of sleaze, who guzzled iced coffee at his kitchen table and knocked out over 150 books on a typewriter during his heyday, is well represented here, with titles like “Girls’ Dormitory” and “Trailer Tramp.”

Rounding out this sleaze pile is the usual lot of beautiful books for smart people: Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Bringhurst, Jean Rhys, and others, as well as the latest by London’s own 845 Press. Well, two of those 845 Press titles are available, but not the third because Jason dropped the third behind a bookcase nailed to our front desk and needs one of those grabbers or something to fish it out. So if anyone has a grabber…

Much love,
Jason and Vanessa
